Hail damage is not always obvious from the ground. This project began with a methodical roof inspection that documented the damage pattern on the shingles and the collateral evidence on exterior metal components.
The challenge
Build a complete picture of the storm damage.
The roof showed repeated hail impacts across multiple test areas. Sawtooth also found impact evidence beyond the shingles, including damage to a metal roof vent and the gutter system.
Those collateral findings mattered because they helped demonstrate that the weather event affected the roofing system and related exterior components—not just one isolated spot.
The inspection
Every finding was photographed and organized.
Sawtooth marked representative hail impacts, photographed the roof by slope and documented damaged metal components. Wide drone views recorded the overall roof configuration while close photographs preserved the details needed for clear construction communication.
- Hail impacts documented across the architectural shingles
- Test areas photographed to show the density and distribution of impacts
- Collateral damage documented on a metal roof vent
- Gutter impact documented at the exterior edge
- Overall roof geometry captured with aerial photography
Claim coordination
Sawtooth kept the construction communication moving.
Sawtooth handled the claim-related construction communications with American Family Insurance, supplying the roof findings and supporting documentation needed to explain the replacement scope.
American Family determined coverage under the homeowner's policy. The covered outcome was a complete roof replacement, with the homeowner responsible for the policy deductible.
The insurance carrier makes coverage decisions. Sawtooth's role was to inspect, document, explain the construction scope and complete the authorized roofing work.
The result
A fully replaced roof and a consistent finished system.
The aging brown roof was replaced with a new dark architectural-shingle system. Final drone photography documented the completed field shingles, hips, ridges, valleys and roof penetrations from multiple angles.
The homeowner received a complete roof replacement through the American Family claim and paid only the deductible required by the policy.
Before and after
From documented damage to completed work.
